Not to be outdone by Audi or BMW, Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to release 10 new plug-in hybrid models by 2017, with at least two of those models arriving this fall. That’s a new plug-in vehicle every four months. Mercedes-Benz has also announced that the new models will be designated with a simple “e” instead of the longer “plug-in hybrid” branding.
“Plug-in hybrids are a key technology on the road to the local emission-free future of the automobile,” emphasizes Dr. Thomas Weber, a professor and member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, who is responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “Plug-in hybrids offer our customers the best of both worlds; in the city they can drive in all-electric mode, while on long journeys they benefit from the combustion engine’s range.”

Following the release of the S 500 plug-in hybrid and the upcoming C 350 e, Mercedes-Benz will expand its plug-in hybrid range with PHEV versions of several of its models including the new GLE crossover. Mercedes-Benz hasn’t announced if all of the plug-in hybrids will be available in the states, but we hope most of them do, since BMW is working on PHEV versions of all of its core models and Audi will electrify most of its lineup by 2020.
At least 2016 will be a good year for Mercedes-Benz since its electric lineup will include the new S 500 e and C 350 e models, in addition to the B-Class Electric Drive, E 400 Hybrid and Smart Fortwo Electric Drive models.
