The Toyota Prius still holds the title as the best-selling hybrid ever, but now it’s about to get some new competition from Hyundai. Hyundai has set its eyes squarely on the Prius with its first dedicated hybrid, the 2017 Ioniq. While the Prius is only offered in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, the Ioniq takes things a step further by becoming the first model to be offered in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric versions.
On the outside, the Ioniq’s wedge shape is similar to the Prius and Chevy Volt. While the next-generation Prius has taken on a new, more polarizing look, the Ioniq has a more conservative exterior inspired by the brand’s latest design language. The Ioniq is based on an entirely new platform that was developed specifically for this new model, which is made of a combination of advanced high strength steel and lightweight aluminum. The hood, tailgate and suspension are also made of aluminum to save weight.

The Ioniq hybrid will be the first of the three models available and will be powered by a 104-hp 1.6L four-cylinder engine and 46-hp electric motor. The electric motor gets its power from a lithium-ion battery and the hybrid powertrain sends the power to the front wheels via a dual-clutch transmission.
Hyundai hasn’t announced when the plug-in hybrid and fully-electric versions will be available, but we’re keeping our eyes peeled.
