Alan Whitehead returns as Shadow Energy and Climate Change Minister

Jeremy Corbyn continues reshuffle with appointments to business and environment teams, as a number of MPs who resigned over the summer return to the front bench

Dr Alan Whitehead has returned to his previous post as shadow energy and climate change minister, just months after resigning in protest at Jeremy Corbyn's leadership.

Whitehead (pictured) becomes the latest in a growing band of Labour MPs to agree to return to the front bench following Corbyn's overwhelming victory in this summer's leadership race.

He joins the revamped Shadow Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy team with shadow secretary of state Clive Lewis, shadow minister for industrial strategy Chi Onwurah, and shadow labour minister Jack Dromey.

Whitehead is a widely respected expert on energy and environmental issues, having previously served on the Energy and Climate Change and Environmental Audit Committees.

He stepped down as part of the wave of resignations in protest at Corbyn's leadership, writing that while the Labour leader was a "good, decent, committed person", he was "not the right person to lead the opposition".

BusinessGreen understands that Barry Gardiner, shadow secretary of state for international trade, will also continue to work on energy and climate change issues.

Corbyn also expanded his shadow environment team, moving Sue Hayman from the whips' office to shadow minister for flooding and coastal communities and promoting Mary Glindon to shadow minister for farming and rural affairs.

In addition, Chris Matheson has returned to the front bench after resigning, accepting a post as shadow PPS to shadow environment secretary Rachael Maskell.
