Barcelona’s greenest bridge will be paved with smog-eating, glow-in-the-dark concrete

The Sarajevo Bridge in Barcelona will soon receive a major green facelift complete with smog-eating concrete, vegetated green walls, and solar-powered glow-in-the-dark paving and LEDs. Designed by Spanish architecture studio BCQ, the infrastructural upgrade is part of the Barcelona City Council’s plan to transform the bridge into an eye-catching new gateway into the city. The energy self-sufficient bridge will double as an urban plaza with new seating and shade elements.

The Sarajevo Bridge is the northernmost piece of infrastructure to span the Avinguda Meridiana, a highway that brings southbound traffic into the Catalonia capital. The elevated bridge’s conspicuous location motivated the city council to transform the structure into an eco-friendly green threshold for Barcelona. The renovated bridge will improve air quality and serve as a pedestrian-friendly meeting point between the two Trinitat neighborhoods.

BCQ’s designs will bring a dramatic change to the Sarajevo Bridge—currently a boring and unsheltered roadway devoid of greenery—and clad the structure with green walls and pergolas. The bridge’s pavement will be replaced with photocatalytic concrete, a self-cleaning material that oxidizes pollutants and purifies the air. To make the bridge energy self-sufficient, the structure will be lit by solar-powered LEDs and photo-luminescent elements embedded into the concrete.
