Facebook's New Office Is Unlike Anything You've Ever Seen

Facebook opened the doors to its spectacular West Campus complex in Menlo Park, CA, yesterday. The 430,000-square-foot office can hold 2,800 workers and was designed by Frank Gehry. The superstar architect was asked by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to create a space that was functional, adaptable, and in fitting with the company's open and casual culture.

The resulting complex could be described as the designer hoodie of office buildings: unpretentious, yet deliberately constructed down to the last stitch. "From the start, Mark wanted a space that was unassuming, matter-of-fact and cost effective. He did not want it overly designed," Gehry said in a written statement.

The complex's cavernous single-room design (one of the largest open-concept structures to date) is packed with colorful art installations and Gehry's signature eye-catching architectural details, such as a geometric staircase. Beneath its stilt-like foundation is an energy-efficient parking lot, and above is a nine-acre roof garden complete with a walking loop and hundreds upon hundreds of trees. The entire complex is LEED gold certified by the US Green Building Council.

Unlike his usually grand designs, Gehry describes the Facebook complex as having a "rawness" and "toughness" conducive to "innovation and invention of the highest level." Take a peek at the groundbreaking Facebook complex in the pictures here.
