Modern Marlboro Cottages use natural and locally sourced materials in Vermont

HGA Architects enhanced the modest beauty of a 15-acre property in rural Vermont with the Marlboro Cottages—five cedar-clad cabins with a contemporary twist to the 400-year-old Cape Cod typology. The cottages were built for the Marlboro Music Festival, an annual summer retreat that brings young classical music talents and master artists together for a seven-week-long advanced classical training on the tiny Marlboro Campus. Constructed with locally sourced natural materials, these modern and modest gabled structures sit lightly on the landscape.

Built to house senior musicians, the cottages comprise three different configurations: three 1,620-square-foot cottages with three bedrooms, one 1,445-square-foot two-bedroom cottage, and one dormitory-style 2,335-square-foot cottage with four bedrooms. Instead of the traditional white clapboard, the architects clad the cottages with stained red cedar planks that emphasize the buildings’ connection with the forest. The steep pitched roofs are lined with locally sourced slate shingles.

Like the facade, the interior is constructed with locally sourced materials rendered with natural finishes and a restrained color palette. Warm-toned white pine covers the interior walls and ceilings and is balanced by the dark and cool Vermont slate floors. Large windows frame the landscape and fill every room with an abundance of natural light.
