Spanish architects Jose Selgas and Lucia Cano of SelgasCano just unveiled designs for the 2015 Serpentine Pavilion, a temporary summer structure to be built in London’s Kensington Gardens. Commissioned by the Serpentine Galleries, SelgasCano’s colorful chrysalis-like design is characteristic of their other playful nature-inspired works. The bold structure will be made from layers of plastic fabric and multicolored webbing to create the effect of a kaleidoscope of stained glass from the inside.

Every year the Serpentine Galleries invites renowned architects and design teams (who have yet to complete any work in the UK) to create a temporary pavilion that will be open to the public for three summer months at the Gallery’s lawn. SelgasCano’s design is evocative of last year’s cocoon-shaped pavilion designed by Chilean architect Smiljan Radic. The brightly colored structure is made from a double-skinned shell of opaque and transparent fluorine-plastic fabric (ETFE) and will be engineered by AECOM.

The labyrinth-like pavilion will be accessible via multiple side entrances and an open gathering space and cafe will be located at the heart of the structure. “The spatial qualities of the Pavilion only unfold when accessing the structure and being immersed within it,” write the designers. “Each entrance allows for a specific journey through the space, characterized by color, light and irregular shapes with surprising volumes.” The 2015 Serpentine Pavilion will be on show June 25 through October 18 at London’s Kensington Gardens.
