NRG Energy and Warren Buffett's MidAmerican top solar ownership table

Warren Buffett's MidAmerican Energy is among the largest investors in solar power stations, according to new industry figures.

The company comes second only to NRG Energy in terms of solar capacity owned at the end of 2014, reveals data from Wiki-Solar.

The two companies have invested together in the 350MW Agua Caliente plant, while MidAmerican also owns the world's largest operating plant, First Solar's 550MW Topaz plant, and will shortly add the 585MW Solar Star development, which is nearing completion. Among NRG's 12 solar assets is SunPower's 250MW California Valley project 250 MW.

NRG with 729MW of operational capacity and MidWestern with 728.8MW dominate the list of power producers and plant owners, ahead of GE on 503.8MW, Hong Kong's United Photovoltaics with 502.1MW and Enerparc of Germany on 443.8MW.

UK firm Lightsource Renewable Energy comes sixth with 423.5MW across 64 sites, while Google has the 15th largest portfolio, owning four sites with a combined capacity of 224.6MW.

"The ownership of utility-scale plants is more diversified than their construction," said Wiki-Solar founder Philip Wolfe. "We list over 600 different companies which own operating projects on our database, but only about 300 EPC [engineering, procurement and construction] contractors were involved in building them. Development is even more widely spread with some 900 companies involved."
