This 12-storey tower designed by Lever Architecture will become the tallest wooden building in the United States. The mixed-use building, called Framework, will be constructed from cross- and glue-laminated timber and then placed atop a standard mat foundation made of reinforced concrete. It will be built in Portland, Oregon's Pearl District.
The project is funded by local real estate firm, Project^, and local investor, Home Forward. The 130-foot-tall building has a rectilinear plan and is meant to be clad in glass, wood screens and hanging plants. Its floor slabs and lateral force resisting system (LFRS) is designed to be built from cross-laminated timber, while beams and columns will be constructed of glue-laminated timber.

“The design is intended to reveal the nature of the innovative tall timber structure at the scale of street and the larger city skyline,” said the architects.
Sitting atop a reinforced concrete foundation, the timber structure will be visible from both inside and outside, with the volume split in half by a central vertical core, also visible from the outside. Social interaction and clever use of resources are ensured by carefully organizing the circulation and building services.
The firm has already received recognition in the field of timber construction for their progressive design. Lever Architecture received America’s first Tall Wood Building Prize for Formwork, together with SHoP, with their 475 West 18th Street project-slated to be New York’s tallest timber-framed structure.
“The building seeks to develop a model for a sustainable urban ecology by promoting social justice, sustainable building and economic opportunity, thus yielding broad advancement of these objectives at a national scale,” added Lever Architecture. With Framework, they are hoping to promote wooden buildings and help in overcoming the permitting hurdles this type of structure encounter due to fire and life safety and structural requirements.
