The pavilion will house exhibitions and content based on the theme of nutrition, health and well-being, and will serve as the pavilion for Dutch province Flevoland. Its architecture reflects the topography of the province, which was established in the 1980s on land reclaimed from the Zuiderzee inland sea. Hence, the lowest level of the building will be five meters below sea level-just like the majority of land in Flevoland, while the roof will function as an elevated winter garden.

In order to make it look like the upper levels are floating, the architect chose to clad the exposed walls below sea level in mirrors. Contrasting the lower section, the upper walls and roof will be built from earth and include a greenhouse.

“The design embodies the story of the ‘making of’ Flevoland,” said the design team. “Innovative water management, sustainable energy and food production form part of its DNA… The building makes optimum use of the microclimate with natural shading, passive heating and cooling and natural ventilation.”
