This fall the 200-mile Chevy Bolt is going to drastically shake up the existing EV market and make almost every other electric car in its segment obsolete. And while it may be a few more years until almost every electric car has a range similar to the Bolt, BMW has confirmed that its i3 electric car is going to get some extra driving range with battery upgrades later this year. The upgrades are expected to give the i3 a 50 percent longer driving range, which translates to around 120 miles on a single charge.
Speaking to Automotive News, Ian Robertson, a BMW AG board member revealed that the 2017 i3 will get an improved lithium ion battery pack, “which puts it into a much more usable range.” BMW hasn’t revealed the official specs for the 2017 i3, but the new battery will likely add about 40 miles or so to the i3’s driving range, which equates to about 120 miles. That’s still lower than the Chevy Bolt, but the i3’s driving range will be longer than other competitors, like the Nissan Leaf and VW e-Golf.

The upgrades will also apply to the i3 with the range extender, which means that it should have a driving range closer to the 200 mile mark. The good news is that we won’t have to wait too long to get the updated i3, since it’s expected to arrive sometime this summer.
