BSI Group seeks input for climate adaptation and natural capital standards

BSI Group has provided an update on plans for its suite of sustainability management standards, calling for interested parties to help shape proposed standards for climate adaptation and natural capital management.

The influential standards body yesterday confirmed it had started work on where standards may be needed in the field of climate adaptation and how international standards could be developed to aid natural capital management initiatives. The group said that parties interested in developing strategy and standards in either field should contact it directly.

The organisation said it was also inviting comment until January 12th on its draft ISO 20400 sustainable procurement standard, which is expected to be published towards the end of 2016. The international standard is designed to build on the UK's BS 8903 standard, which was the first to set out a standardised approach to sustainable procurement that seeks to minimise the environmental impact of procurement practices.

The group also announced yesterday that it remains on track to launch ISO 14004, a "sister standard" for its popular ISO 14001 environmental management standard, on March 1st.

"ISO 14004, Environmental management systems - Guidelines on implementation can help organisations of any size or sector to implement an environmental management system," BSI said.

"The draft standard provides much detail, hints and tips on setting an environmental policy, thinking about environmental aspects and impacts, identifying interested parties, and other essential information. ISO 14004 supports ISO 14001, Environmental management systems. Requirements with guidance for use, by providing greater guidance on the revised requirements and good practice activities outlined in this popular standard."
