BT has announced plans to work with its suppliers to enhance their green credentials, after announcing that the manufacturer of its BT Home Hubs has become the first company to sign up to the telco giant's new sustainability assessment tool.
French telco and smart city technology suppler Sagemcom announced late last month that it would pilot the BT Better Future Supplier Forum's Sustainability Assessor tool, which requires suppliers to measure their sustainability practices against standards set by green business trailblazers.
The tool builds on the existing work of BT's supplier forum, which since 2012 has urged suppliers to work together to deploy sustainability best practices.
The new assessment tool asks suppliers a series of simple questions to gauge their current sustainability performance and measure it against case studies from leading green business proponents around the world. It also offers participants advice on how to improve their performance and secure competitive advantage by enhancing their green credentials.
Erik Raphael, director BT Devices and BT WiFi, said the pilot represented a major step forward for the new approach.
"This is a very exciting and important development that moves us a step closer towards ensuring supply chains around the world are embracing the most sustainable business practices possible," he said. "The Sustainability Assessor means we can extend the benefit and learnings of the Better Future Supplier Forum even further into our supply chain. This simple tool helps suppliers measure just how sustainable they are compared with the best in the world."
Florian Tremblay, Sustainable Development Expert at Sagemcom, welcomed the roll out of the tool and confirmed that the company planned to extend the use of the new approach into its own supply chain.
"Wide-ranging while capable of being individually tailored, the Sustainability Assessor has the ability to improve the sustainability of the supply chain," he said. "By providing useful feedback to suppliers regardless of their performance level, the tool will educate and support individual companies in a tailored and effective way... Following the successful completion of this phase, the Sustainability Assessor will be rolled out to Sagemcom's supply chain at large. Through this action, Sagemcom will make an important step towards achieving its objective of implementing sustainability at all stages of its global supply chain."
