Entrade opens biomass research centre in Liverpool

German biomass firm Entrade Energiesystems has today opened a new Biomass Research Centre in Liverpool as part of its plans to expand operations in the UK.

The 3,600 square metre facility in the Knowlsey Industrial Park near Liverpool will serve as the new "operative node" for the UK market, and will house the firm's operations and maintenance staff, Entrade said in a statement.

Entrade will use the new site as a research base for developing new types of biomass fuel to power its combined heat and power plants. For example, Entrade said it has partnered with food waste recycling company Tidy Planet to collect food waste from international airports to turn into fuel.

"The customised fuel developed at the ENTRADE Biomass Research Centre solves a gigantic and global waste issue while providing a cheaper feedstock for biomass power and heat," Entrade said.

Last year, Entrade revealed its micro-scale biomass combined heat and power system, which it claims can produce around-the-clock baseload power from a plant the size of a standard shipping container. The E3 technology can produce 22kW of electrical energy and 55kW of thermal energy, using half a tonne of biomass pellets every day.
