After hearing what they thought was thunder, some Vietnam residents discovered three mysterious metal orbs ranging in size from just 9 ounces to 99 pounds. The spheres reportedly fell from the sky and two of them landed in residential neighborhoods, causing locals to run in fear. Government officials say they believe the strange round objects are actually space debris, and local residents can rest easy knowing the orbs are no longer dangerous to them.
So far, Vietnam’s defense ministry has determined that the metal orbs are actually compressed-air tanks that came from an aircraft or possibly a rocket. They are believed to have been manufactured in Russia, and there’s no evidence to indicate whether they were launched into space by another country. They could even be remnants from a failed satellite launch, according to aerospace expert Prof Nguyen Khoa Son, who thinks they could belong to an old satellite that failed to burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Witnesses told Thanh Nien News that they saw and heard the first sphere, which turned out to be the middle by weight, before it crashed into a neighbor’s garden in Yen Bai Province. The smallest of the three orbs landed on a house, and then rolled onto the ground. The third to make landfall was the largest sphere, weighing nearly 100 pounds, and it landed near a stream without further incident. Nobody was injured by any of the falling objects, according to local media.
