Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects is always ahead of the curve when it comes to cutting-edge design. The Danish design studio recently won the competition to design a new residential development in Aarhus, Denmark’s second largest city. The ‘Valdemars Have’ urban residential block will reinterpret the concept of old red brick townhouses and create a unique public urban garden. This won’t be the studio’s first project in Aarhus-they recently completed Dokk1, Scandinavia’s largest library and the largest construction project ever built by the Municipality of Aarhus.
The block is nestled on a sloping plot located in the cultural and green heart of Aarhus, close to the city’s main cultural attractions. Inspired by traditional red brick architecture, the architects made sure to create a similar interplay of masonry patterns, windows and balconies, and even used different shades of red brick that vary from light red to almost black. The entire block is surrounded and permeated by green spaces. Two six-story volumes lower to four levels as they approach the neighboring street Valdemarsgade and the former military hospital. Promenades dominate the landscaped site on the north side.
The development will comprise 106 apartments of different sizes, from 2-bedroom flats to large penthouses with private rooftop terraces. It is designed to become a prime location for those looking to live in a calm environment but want to stay close to the city’s numerous cultural amenities.
