TfL targets freight fumes with low-emission vehicle push

Mayor Boris Johnson has launched a plan to accelerate the take-up of low-emission trucks and lorries, as part of fresh efforts to tackle air pollution in London.

Launched on Wednesday, the LoCITY initiative will aim to encourage adoption of cleaner vehicles by reforming environmental operating standards, increase the availability and affordability of low-emission vehicles, and improve refuelling and recharging infrastructure.

It will also look to improve planning and land use regulation to make the use of low-emission vehicles in the city more practical.

London's Transport Commissioner, Mike Brown, said the LoCITY project will bring together vehicle manufacturers, infrastructure providers and the industry to improve London's air quality by making cleaner vehicles a "realistic choice" for operators.

"Together we can improve London's air quality, and by supporting the freight sector - which is essential for our city to function - we will have a real impact," he said in a statement.

The programme's launch comes as the city prepares to launch the world's first low-emission transport zone in 2020. Transport for London claims the initiative will almost halve emissions of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter from vehicle exhausts.

Freight makes up 17 per cent of London's traffic. Mayor Johnson said curbing emissions in the sector will be key to the success of the low-emission zone. "I am confident that the strict tightening of our emission standards will help dramatically improve air quality and lower NO2 across the city," he added.

London currently has some of the worst air pollution in the country, with more than 6,000 premature deaths every year as a result of poor air quality, according to one study.
