These luxurious sculptures are made with an unexpected material

If ocean pollution seems like the last thing you’d want in a beautiful sculpture, prepare to have Studio Swine (Super Wide Interdisciplinary New Explorers) change your mind. The adventurous Anglo-Japanese design studio recently completed Gyrecraft, a series of objects made from mixed media and harvested sea plastic from gyres: circular ocean currents have become giant receptacles for trash. The duo literally turned their collected ocean trash into treasure—and the luxurious results are breathtaking.

Luxury sculpture isn’t Studio Swine’s first foray into upcycling unwanted materials. The creative firm has created furniture out of sea plastic, turned bottles into a lamp, and even braided human hair into eyeglasses. Their latest collection of work, the Gyrecraft, comprises five beautiful sculptures, each representing the five major ocean gyres. Though all objects are crafted from mixed media, the focal point of each piece is the recycled sea plastic.

As ocean gyres suck trash into its whirling currents, the plastic become increasingly broken down into tiny fragments, which makes them very difficult to recover. Studio Swine carefully harvested as much as possible with fine netting and then used the Solar Extruder, a solar-powered machine that melts and extrudes the plastic. “In the Gyrecraft collection [we] use sea plastic as a valuable and desirable material reminiscent of turtle shell and corals.” writes Studio Swine.
