If waking up to gorgeous seaside views beneath the dappled shade of olive trees sounds like your idea of paradise, you’ll love this tiny solar-powered cabin set on the Greek island of Crete. Scottish design/build firm Echo Living designed the House on Wheels, a bespoke eco-retreat that offers off-grid living with minimal environmental impact. The site-specific cabin was prefabricated offsite in Echo Living’s workshop in Scotland and then shipped and craned into place between three ancient olive trees.
The House on Wheels was commissioned by a yoga teacher from Glasgow who sought a home that would preserve both the site’s integrity and its three ancient olive trees. Echo Living rose to that challenge by creating a modern and minimalist eco-cabin designed to sit perfectly between the trio of trees and overlook views of the sea. Clad in white composite wood with etched surface patterns, the tiny retreat includes two structures: the main living quarters with a deck, and a small outhouse comprising a shower and composting toilet.

Naturally finished timber panels and reclaimed tiles line the interior, while windows and glazed sliding doors flood the home with natural light and expand the living space to the outdoor deck. The main living area is arranged in an open-plan layout with a compact kitchen on one end and a living room on the other. The kitchen wall rotates outwards for access to the deck. The bedroom is tucked behind the living room fireplace on a raised platform with a view of the sea. The home is lit with 12v LEDs at night. Water is pumped into the home from the nearby village supply.
