Company invites large business customers to help balance supply and demand when wind is stronger or weaker than anticipated
In a further boost to the still fledgling demand management sector, offshore wind energy giant DONG Energy has this week unveiled its own Renewable Balancing Reserve service.
The company yesterday announced it was moving into the demand management market and would be inviting large business customers to adjust their energy consumption when wind strength varies from forecast, making it easier for grid operators to balance supply and demand.

"As the operator of the largest offshore wind portfolio in the UK and a supplier to an increasing portfolio of business customers, DONG Energy has created the Renewable Balancing Reserve product to help balance its portfolio and fulfil generation contracts in the most cost-effective way," the company explained in a statement. "DONG Energy will invite customers to either turn down consumption or increase on-site generation production when the wind blows more or less than forecast, helping to keep the system balanced and reducing the need to call on conventional or more expensive generation sources to make up the gap."
Demand management or demand response services see business customers offered payments if they agree to curb the use of grid power during periods of peak demand.
Advocates of the approach argue it results in minimum disruption for customers - firms typically do not notice if they turn off non-essential equipment for a few hours - and is more cost effective than building additional back up generation capacity. In addition, the approach curbs carbon emission as it reduces the need for back up thermal power plants.
DONG said its new service would differ from some demand management schemes currently on the market, because customers would be able to choose whether to respond to each individual invitation to reduce power demand.
"DONG Energy is investing in the development of new commercial solutions to balance an intermittent generation portfolio, whilst helping businesses to use their flexibility to create value," said Jeff Whittingham, managing director of DONG Energy Sales UK, in a statement. "Renewable Balancing Reserve is different, provides businesses with an alternative way to reduce costs and create new revenue, without the risk of penalties or restrictive schedules."
