Intelligent Energy steams ahead with Indian fuel cell milestone

The first fuel cells to be installed by Intelligent Energy in India following a landmark deal to supply clean power to telecom towers have generated more than 10MWh in the first three months of deployment, the firm has revealed.

The announcement came on Monday during a visit by energy and climate change secretary Amber Rudd to the clean tech firm's headquarters in Loughborough.

"We have done only a small proportion of the work that we intend to do over the next 10 years and the results are really impressive," said Peter Brown, managing director of Intelligent Energy's distributed power and generation division, in a statement. "Extrapolated over a larger scale and they could be game-changing."

The firm landed the £1.2bn deal in October to provide back-up power to thousands of phone masts in India over the next 10 years, in an effort to replace unreliable and carbon-emitting diesel generators with clean hydrogen fuel cell technology. The generators can run up to eight hours a day in order to keep the telecom towers operational during persistent power outages.

"We are providing proof in the field as to how our fuel cells can be used to reduce carbon emissions while providing clean, silent, always-on power, without the need for subsidy," said Dennis Hayter, vice president of government and external programmes for Intelligent Energy, in a statement.

During her visit, Rudd rode in an Intelligent Energy fuel-cell powered black cab and was shown examples of the firm's long-lasting hydrogen fuel cells for smartphones and laptops.

"It's been great to visit Intelligent Energy today and see first-hand world-leading innovation from a UK company that's a real international success story, exporting cutting-edge technology that's making a difference right now," said Rudd.
