New This Week: 4 Modern Kitchens That Deliver on Details (9 photos)

4. Special Blend

Designer: Stephen Bruns of Bruns Architecture
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Size: 186 square feet (17.2 square meters); 15½ by 12 feet (4.7 by 3.6 meters)
Year built: 2015

Homeowners’ request: Big open-concept space that shares views and light with adjacent areas. “One’s experience can be made more powerful by composing each space as a sequence within a larger journey,” says architect Stephen Bruns.

Special features: Big multifunctional island. Professional range. Mahogany-paneled refrigerator that blends in with the architecture. Large pantry. Matte lacquer cabinets. Soapstone countertops.

Who uses it: A couple who entertains frequently and hosts large groups during extended holiday visits.

Designer secret: “Perhaps the most challenging aspect of creating architecturally significant spaces is to edit material selections down to what is only necessary,” Bruns says. “By reducing materials to the essential, we can allow the form and function of the space to be celebrated and enjoyed.”

Splurges and savings: The homeowners saved by using Ikea cabinet boxes and splurged on covering them with locally fabricated custom doors, panels and countertops.

The nitty-gritty: Countertops: soapstone; cabinets: Ikea boxes with custom mahogany panels; refrigerator: Sub-Zero; range: Bertazzoni; range hood: Zephyr; microwave: Kenmore Elite; dishwasher: Bosch; sink and faucet: Kohler; flooring: custom ground and polished concrete
