Paris to rev up electric moped hire scheme

Having already pioneered on-the-go cycle and electric car hire schemes, Paris is poised to introduce a similar hire scheme for electric mopeds.

According to reports, the mayor's office this week confirmed that 1,000 electric scooters will be deployed across the city from this summer, as part of Mayor Anne Hildago's latest efforts to cut air pollution and congestion in the French capital.

The scheme will be managed by electric vehicle hire specialist Cityscoot following a successful trial of 50 scooters. "In the last three months 1,200 testers have completed nearly 4,500 journeys," the mayor's office was quoted as saying by news agency AFP, adding that the result of the trial had been "very positive".

The smartphone-enabled hire service will see users pay €3 for each 15 minutes of driving, while helmets and gloves will also be available for hire.

In related news, a Ugandan company this week unveiled what is being described as Africa's first solar-powered bus.

According to BBC reports, Kiira Motors demonstrated the electric bus, which uses integrated solar panels on its roof to boost its 80km range throughout the day.

The company said it is not seeking partners to help it move the concept vehicle into mass production.
