Abu Dhabi hails record low solar power bids

Local media reports Sweihan solar farm is set to deliver clean power at a record low cost following latest auction

The United Arab Emirates looks set to seize back the record for the lowest cost solar project in development from Chile, following a series of record low bids from developers for the proposed 350MW Sweihan project.

According to local media reports, the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority received six bids for the Sweihan project, with the lowest bid from an Asian consortium coming in at 2.42 US cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) and the second lowest bid from a local firm reaching 2.53 US cents per kWh.

Both bids undercut the $29.1/MWh bid tabled this summer by solar developer Solarpack Corp Tecnologica for a 120MW project in Chile, which seized the title for lowest cost solar project from a Dubai Electricity & Water Authority energy contract that promised to deliver power at $29.9/MWh.

Reports also suggested the Sweihan project could trim costs still further, after the unnamed Asian consortium tabled a proposal to deliver power at 2.30 cents per kWh if it is permitted to expand the project to 1,170MW.

The project is yet to be confirmed, but if one of the lowest bids secures the contract the development could set a new record for the lowest cost energy project in development worldwide.

The news comes a week after Swedish energy giant Vattenfall won two contracts to build offshore wind farms in Danish waters that would set a new low cost record of €60/MWh. The deals promise to undercut the €72.70/MWh DONG Energy project awarded the go-ahead in the Netherlands this summer.

However, some uncertainty remains about the future of the two Danish projects, after the government signalled it could yet shelve the projects in response to concerns about the impact of green energy subsidies on bills.
