Consortium led by ‘clean cold’ specialist Dearman wins funding to further develop zero emission refrigeration engine
Clean cold specialist Dearman has won £6m in government grant funding to support the development of its zero-emission engine fuelled by liquid nitrogen.
Dearman will lead a consortium of organisations and universities to further develop the engine itself and commercial applications to help scale its deployment. The £6m in government funding, announced yesterday, will be matched by consortium members, taking the total funding pot to £15.5m.

The engine is currently being trialled by supermarket giant Sainsbury's to deliver chilled goods to stores around London, but Dearman claims the technology has applications across transport, logistics and the built environment.
Dearman said the extra funding will help it develop the technology for use as air conditioning and auxiliary power system for buses - which in hot climates can increase diesel use by as much as a third.
"The clean cold and power technology we are developing with our partners, has the potential to be exported to fast-growing economies around the world, helping them to meet their booming energy needs without creating disastrous environmental consequences," Toby Peters, chief executive of Dearman, said in a statement.
The latest tranche of funding follows a £16m cash boost for Dearman at the beginning of the year from investment firm Park Vale Capital.
