Cubico snaps up 50MW UK solar park in latest green investment

Global clean energy and water investor Cubico Sustainable Investments has acquired the 50MW Owls Hatch solar park in Kent from developers British Solar Renewables (BSR) for an undisclosed sum.

The deal, announced late last week, is the latest in a series of deals between Cubico and BSR that have seen the investor snap up several of the solar developers' projects.

In total, Cubico has acquired 120MW of clean energy capacity over the last eight months.

In a statement David Peill, commercial director at BSR, said the proceeds from the sale of Owls Hatch would be used to fund further solar development, alongside the companies' growing pipeline of energy storage projects.

Owls Hatch was originally developed by BSR and has been operational since March 2015. At 50MW in capacity it is one of England's largest solar farms.

The market for large scale solar farms in the UK  has stalled in recent months in the wake of the government's decision to impose steep subsidy cuts earlier this year.

However, some developers remain optimistic that a combination of falling technology costs, emerging storage technologies, and potential 'private wire' projects where solar power is consumed on-site by customers will provide the sector with new growth opportunities.
