She has sat on the Environment Agency board since 2009 and boasts a 25 year career working in financial services, much of it focused on sustainable investing and corporate finance.

Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom said Howard Boyd would bring "unrivalled experience, leadership and enthusiasm to the Environment Agency".

Howard Boyd was Director of Stewardship at Jupiter Asset Management until July 2014, where she played a key role in the investment firm's work on sustainable investment.

She currently serves on a range of boards and advisory committees that address environmental and corporate governance issues, including with the Future Cities Catapult, ShareAction, the Aldersgate Group, Menhaden Capital PLC, the 30% Club Steering Committee, the Executive Board of The Prince's Accounting for Sustainability Project and the Carbon Trust Advisory Panel.

In addition, she has in the past served as a director of green investment specialist Triodos Renewables PLC and as chair of the UK sustainable investment and finance association (UKSIF).

She was also a member of the Commission on Environmental Markets and Economic Performance, which was set up by the UK government to make detailed proposals specifically on enhancing the UK environmental industries, technologies and markets.

"It's an honour to be appointed Chair of the Environment Agency," Howard Boyd said in a statement. "It is a fantastic organisation making a real difference to the environment, wildlife and local communities.

"There are big challenges ahead - ensuring the country is more resilient to extreme weather, protecting and enhancing the environment, and promoting sustainable growth - I look forward to playing my part."

Howard Boyd faces a challenging in-tray with the Environment Agency tasked with playing a leading role in bolstering the UK's flood resilience, enforcing a raft of legislation that is likely to be impacted by the Brexit negotiations, and regulating the nascent fracking industry.

The watchdog has also been forced to cope with swingeing budget cuts in recent years, with critics warning that steep spending cuts have eroded its ability to tackle increasingly complex environmental issues.
