Fitzrovia residents power up with 38 new electric vehicle charge points

Evolt installs chargepoints and load distribution tech for businesses and residents at central London new-build development

Businesses and residents at a recently-completed development in Fitzrovia, central London, are set to benefit from 38 new electric vehicle chargepoints installed by EV charging systems firm Evolt.

Developer Exemplar appointed Evolt to supply and install 38 single outlet AC wall-mount chargers as well as load distribution technology at its new mixed-use Fitzroy Place development in W1, which is home to both houses and businesses.

According to Evolt, the load distribution system ensures that total power to all chargepoints is consistently available and evenly distributed to prevent overloading.
And, when an electric vehicle is fully-charged, its power usage is re-distributed to the other EVs so they can also achieve a full charge in the shortest possible time, the firm said.

The chargepoints are split into four groups, with each group controlled by a distribution board and connected to a central server that manages the system and provides real-time reporting for the chargepoint operator.

According to Evolt, in case there is a local power outage, the server also has a failsafe mechanism that ‘instructs' the distribution boards to continue charging vehicles at a default setting.

Last month, Nissan predicted that electric vehicle chargepoints would outnumber petrol stations in the UK by 2020.

Justin Meyer, general manager of Evolt, said electric vehicles were fast becoming an essential part of city life.

"Charge points at new builds are becoming commonplace, as an increasing number of city dwellers and office workers are increasingly environmentally conscious," he said. "We are visibly seeing the demand for AC charge points at new builds, and it is important to install technology that manages power distribution, otherwise a site's charge point network may never effectively charge numerous EVs simultaneously."

The Fitzroy Place development comprises 235 private apartments, 54 affordable homes, 20,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space, 220,000 sq ft of commercial office space in addition to health and education facilities and public open space.

"Evolt's installation of car chargepoints was a key contribution for us meeting our demanding sustainability objectives at Fitzroy Place," said Michael Bucknell, development director at Exemplar. "As we see central London's air quality moving up the political agenda, encouraging residents and occupiers to embrace electric vehicles will become increasingly key to tackling this very serious health and environmental issue."
