London cabbies hyped about switch to hybrids, survey shows

Eighty per cent of black taxi drivers are interested in buying a low emission vehicle

Four out of every five London taxi drivers are interested in switching their gas guzzling cabs for an hybrid equivalent, according to a survey released today by black cab manufacturer London Taxi Company (LTC).

The survey of close to 1,200 London taxi drivers revealed 80 per cent are either "interested" or "very interested" in buying a zero-emission capable taxi.

LTC is set to launch its battery-powered hybrid model next year, with the new cab scheduled to hit the roads shortly before new regulations which require all new taxis and private hire vehicles in London to have a zero-emissions capability for at least 30 miles come into place in 2018.

Responding to the survey results, Steve McNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Driver's Association which represents more than 11,000 cab drivers in London, said there is a "huge amount of interest" in the new taxi amongst members of his organisation.

"The worst place to breathe in London's polluted air is behind the wheel so our drivers know all too well the impact this is having," he said in a statement. "Cabbies would therefore welcome the opportunity to drive the new Zero Emissions Capable taxi tomorrow, given the opportunity to do so, and are committed to doing their bit to help improve air quality in the capital."

Valerie Shawcross, London's deputy mayor for transport, also welcomed the survey results and said action was needed to clean up London's air. "It's great to hear taxi drivers are ready to play their part, and the use of new zero-emission taxis will make a significant difference," she said in a statement. "We are committed to helping the industry thrive and will be working with TfL to ensure that we do everything we can to make sure this vital transition as quick and easy as possible."

LTC has been manufacturing the UK's black cab in the UK for close to 70 years, and said it is investing £300m to bring the new low emission UK-built taxi to UK and international markets. "We believe we can lead the charge in ensuring London's air quality returns to safe and legal levels and believe that London can lead the world in zero emissions urban transport," said Chris Gubbey, chief executive of LTC, in a statement.
