London to boast Europe's biggest electric bus fleet by the end of the year

Fifty-one new buses will operate on two all-electric routes in central London by end of 2016

The first two all-electric bus routes in central London will be running by the end of the year, Sadiq Khan and Transport for London (TfL) announced as the first nine vehicles of the capital's huge new electric bus fleet were unveiled on Friday.

Bus route 507, from Waterloo station to Victoria, and the 521 route, from Waterloo station to London Bridge, will run using a 51-strong fleet of single-decker electric vehicles by the end of 2016, as part of the Mayor's array of measures to improve air quality in the capital.

The new vehicles - made in Britain by Chinese firm BYD and British manufacturer ADL - will add to the 22 electric buses already operating on outer London's first all-electric bus route in Croydon, and bring the number of the low-carbon vehicles in the capital to 73 - the largest fleet in Europe.

The arrival of the buses marks the first step in the Mayor's plan towards making all 300 single-deck buses in central London zero emission by 2020. The Mayor also plans to make all 3,100 double decker buses hybrid by 2019, and has pledged to put Low Emission Bus Zones into operation by 2020 to dramatically reduce the NOx emissions along particular routes.

Khan said the new buses would help to clean up the capital's "toxic air" and will position London as a world leader in adopting ultra-low emission vehicle technology.

"The transformation of London's bus fleet will play a key role in making our transport cleaner and healthier," he said in a statement. "These first two electric bus routes right through the heart of London are another step towards the end of conventional diesel buses on our roads."
