This simple wooden building in Finland proves that sometimes simplicity is best. The old-fashioned horse stable was designed using a modern approach that ensured excellent ventilation and organization. Finnish firm POOK Architects designed the stable using an unimpregnated conifer as the main material for all the horizontal structures and cladding of the building.
The stable is located in the countryside of Northern Espoo in Finland. Its simple form references the traditional architecture of the region dominated by small stables and interconnected riding trails. The architects used the area’s natural building material – wood – and organized all the central functions under one gabled roof. The layout of the building helps streamline everyday activities of feeding, cleaning and horse care.

Multifunctional spaces, the stalls and the riding arena were placed in close vicinity to one another. Unimpregnated conifer was used as both exterior and interior cladding material, as well as the main material for all the horizontal structures. Inside, conifer controls fluctuations in humidity and ensures good ventilation, both of which are incredibly important in stable design. Pressure force ventilation and the option of using mechanical venting provides additional flexibility for the users to control indoor conditions.
