Schemata Architects recently gave JINS, one of Japan’s biggest eyewear brands, a fresh and modern facelift with the renovation of their shop in Ageo. Commissioned by JINS in celebration of the brand’s 12th anniversary, the architects transformed the existing wood-clad building into a mostly glazed structure that emphasizes transparency. Large low-e windows were installed to help control solar heat gain and put JINS’ extensive eyewear collection in view of the street.
The existing building comprises two L-shaped blocks, one housing the eyewear shop and then other used as a cafe, both of which frame a square courtyard. Due to the mostly opaque facade and building orientation however, the cafe and courtyard were hidden from street view and it was hard for passersby to discern the shop’s purpose.

Schemata Architects’ renovation focused on removing the exterior walls and installing low-e glazed walls in their place to let in natural light and views of the eyewear products and interior. “The interior design was intended to emphasize the effect of exposing the skeleton of the building,” write the architects. “New interior walls are offset from the original wall lines, finished with brick tiles usually used for exterior finishes; shelves and display furniture are designed as independent elements detached from the building.” The architects collaborated with graphic design office KIGI on the arrangement of the products in store.
