Zara unzips first green clothing collection

JoinLife autumn winter 2016 collection is made with eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, recycled wool and forest-friendly wood fibre

Zara has made its first major foray into sustainable fashion with the launch of its first 'green' clothing capsule collection under its ecolabel Join Life.

Although Zara - which is owned by fashion giant Inditex - first began selling clothes under the Join Life label last year, the new launch is the first time it has presented a full seasonal collection through the brand.

The garments in the new collection, which launched earlier this month, are made from organic cotton, recycled wool, recycled polyester and Tencel - a fabric made from sustainably sourced wood.

Meanwhile, the company has also confirmed all the factories producing the Join Life garments are powered by renewable energy and use water-efficient manufacturing processes.

In addition, the range's tags, bags and shipping boxes are all made using recycled materials, and there are plans for clothing donation boxes to be introduced to Zara's US stores to encourage customers to recycle their old clothes.

The Autumn Winter 2016 collection, which will be available across the US, UK and Spain, is the brand's first big marketing push in the sustainable fashion field.

It pits Zara against fast fashion rivals H&M, which has a long-running Conscious collection targeted at 'ethical' shoppers, and online retailer ASOS, which hosts an "Eco-Edit" range on its website.

The growing business interest in sustainable fashion was evident at this year's London Fashion Week, with upcycled garments, biodegradable mannequins and ethical evening wear all on display.
