Hybrid technology has advanced a lot in the last few years and now the technology is now ready to be applied to much larger vehicles, like SUVs. BMW just unveiled the X5 eDrive40e, which is the first plug-in hybrid from the BMW core brand (which doesn’t include the BMW i models). Based on the standard X5, the X5 eDrive40e can travel up to 19 miles in fully electric mode and is rated at 71 mpg.
On the outside the X5 eDrive40e looks almost identical to the standard X5 models, with the exception of the charging port on the front fender. Underneath the skin, the plug-in hybrid is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is mated to an electric motor. Both motors have a combined output of 313 horsepower and 332 lb-ft. of torque, which makes it more powerful than the standard gasoline-powered X5sDrive35i. The 0-62 mph sprint only takes 6.8 seconds and the X5 eDrive40e has a top speed of 130 mph.

The X5 eDrive40E can be recharged by plugging it into a standard household outlet where it will take less than four hours to fully recharge. There are even faster charging options, too, like the BMW i Wallbox or a 240-volt public station. BMW has not announced pricing or when the X5 eDrive40e will be available.
