“Farm-X is a modular vertical farm concept that shifts the historical dichotomy between the production and the consumption of food,” write the architects. Its flexible layout and compact construction allow it to be easily constructed, dismantled, and replicated. The ideal size for a Farm-X measures 32 meters by 32 meters at four stories in height—an area that corresponds to a medium-sized urban block.

The Farm-X design is also modeled after a cradle-to-cradle process, in that food waste will be used to generate the energy for the food-producing facility. The design concept also reduces its environmental impact by reducing the distance of miles traveled for food distribution, production, and waste dismantlement. A proof of concept for Farm-X is nearing completion in Richmond, Virginia.
