Artist Ai Weiwei wants you to get in touch with your inner child, and he created these fantastical sculptures out of bamboo and paper to help you do it. On display in Le Bon Marche, Weiwei created these massive pieces using kite-making techniques. The exhibit is titled, appropriately, "Er Xi" or Child's Play, and the scenes are made up of characters from the 2,000-year old collection of tales called Shan Hai Jing, a series of stories that have been told to children for ages.
“This exhibition speaks to our inner child,” said Weiwei. “Introducing the fantastic within a retail space strikes the imagination of customers, visitors, passersby.”

The process used to make the sculptures is technically simple, since it is essentially just the same process you use to make a kite, which includes stretching silk or paper over a wood frame. But these art pieces are anything but simple. Weiwei employed a team of talented artisans to create the shapes. The lighted pieces were then hung in the store’s atrium, where they look like magnificent paper lanterns.
There are also flat pieces that are displayed in the store’s windows, featuring symbols from Weiwei’s previous work, historic events, art movements and modern events.
