EDF tidal turbine hits the waves in Brittany

Marine turbine manufacturer OpenHydro yesterday announced the deployment of its first tidal turbine in French waters, in partnership with EDF.

The 0.5MW Open-Centre turbine is the first of two due to be erected at EDF's tidal farm off the coast of Paimpol-Brehat in northern Brittany.

Both 16-metre wide turbines are set to be linked to the grid by summer 2016. Once connected, the site will become one of the world's first grid-connected turbine arrays.

Tidal technology is deployed underwater and relies on reaping energy from tides created by the gravitational effect of the sun and moon.

The French utility initiated the €40m (£35m) Paimpol-BrĂ©hat project in 2004, but work did not begin until 2008.

James Ives, chief executive of OpenHydro, said the project forms an essential step in commercialising tidal arrays. "It will allow EDF and OpenHydro to benefit from invaluable experience and help prepare for the Normandie Hydro project, which will see seven tidal turbines in the Raz Blanchard by 2018," he said in a statement.

OpenHydro was the first company to install a turbine at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) facility in Orkney in 2006, and in 2008 became the first company in the UK to successfully generate electricity from a test turbine onto the grid.
