Environmental Audit Committee Chair steps down to stand for Welsh Assembly

Labour MP Huw Irranca-Davies will formally step down as chair of the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) next week as he prepares to leave Parliament to stand for election in the Welsh Assembly.

Since June 2015 Irranca-Davies has led the EAC in a series of high-profile parliamentary investigations into the Conservative government's progress on green issues, covering topics such as the diesel emissions scandal, the privatisation of the Green Investment Bank and the environmental impact of Heathrow expansion.

In his parting statement as chair the MP for Ogmore said the UK still faces "pressing challenges" on climate change, harmful pollutants and the protection of the natural world. "Air quality is unacceptably poor in many of our cities. The government's recent policy reversals on energy and climate change need careful scrutiny. And we are still not doing enough to protect our precious biodiversity," he said.

Irranca-Davies was chosen as the candidate for the Welsh Assembly seat in Ogmore in December 2015. A by-election for his Westminster seat is expected to take place in May, although a date is yet to be confirmed. His successor to the EAC chairmanship will be elected by the whole House in the coming weeks.
