University of Brighton fast-tracks solar installation in last-minute dash for higher subsidy

University of Brighton has installed more than 600 solar panels on its roofs in "record time" in a rush to beat government subsidy cuts.

The installation has seen 663 new solar panels fixed to the roofs of three buildings of its Falmer Campus in East Sussex, which will deliver enough clean energy to meet 7.5 per cent of the campus' annual electricity demand.

The installation was completed in "record time" to ensure it secured the higher tariff rate under the Feed-In Tariff, which was cut by 63 per cent for small-scale renewables earlier this month.

The university said that it brought forward the solar installation as soon as it heard about the impending cuts to the tariff rates, to make sure it could take advantage of the higher payment rate. It said its environment team and the local installation company, Ecosphere Renewables, worked "flat out" over Christmas to complete the installation before the January 15 deadline.

Abigail Dombey, the university's environmental manager, said the installation is a "clear demonstration of the university's commitment to reduce carbon emissions, ensure energy security and to promote sustainability".
