Bristol to award £10,000 grants for community energy projects

Bristol City Council has today moved to further cement the city's reputation as a green hub, with the announcement of a fresh wave of grant funding to support clean energy projects across the city.

The city is offering grants of up to £10,000 through the Bristol Community Energy Fund (BCEF) to sustainable energy projects which help local people reduce their energy use, improve access to clean and renewable energy sources, and encourage energy efficiency.

The funding is available in two categories - smaller grants of up to £2,000 or larger allocations of up to £10,000. Applications for each category are open until March 31 and March 4 respectively.

Bristol's Mayor George Ferguson said the funding will encourage greater diversity in the local energy sector. "Despite the challenge presented by the national withdrawal of tax reliefs and feed-in tariffs, we are continuing to find new ways to support community energy initiatives, making it interesting and possible for local grassroots projects to flourish across the city," he said in a statement.

Groups do not need to be specifically focused on energy or the environment in their everyday operations to apply for the funding, Bristol City Council said. In addition, the grants can be used to support a range of activities and services, from staffing costs to capital expenditure for projects.

The BCEF was established in November 2015 with £885,000 of central government funding to support local energy projects and accelerate the rollout of renewable energy in the Bristol area. Following the grant funding round, the BCEF plans to start issuing loans to community groups to help fund development costs of renewable energy projects.
