Xu Ou and his friend spent approximately 20-some days to put the Optimus Prime sculpture together, using discarded cardboard boxes that had once been used as packaging for electrical appliances. The sculpture is held together with as many as 1,000 screws. Ou says that he was unexpectedly struck with inspiration to make a giant Transformers bot one day as he was sending his son to art class. He thought Optimus Prime would be the most fitting model because the fictional character is known for its strong moral character.

“I also want to tell my son that the best things aren’t always bought and that you can recycle what you already have to make something valuable,” Ou said. “He and his friends really seem to like it.” The cardboard Optimus Prime is currently on display in a public square in Ziyang. It took five men to transport the 2.8-meter-tall sculpture from Ou’s home.
