500 companies receive UK’s first ‘energy labels’ touting clean energy credentials

New labels from Smartest Energy will display source and carbon content of clean electricity bought by firms

Hundreds of companies across the UK will today be issued with the country's first Energy Labels promoting the source and carbon content of the clean electricity they purchase.

Designed by Smartest Energy, the labels are similar in design to the energy efficiency labels found on household electrical appliances, rating companies from A to G based on their electricity sourcing policy.

Smartest Energy will issue 500 companies with the new Energy Label, including construction products multinational Saint-Gobin UK, sustainable building company Willmott Dixon and the University of London.

"For a while now, business customers have been calling for increased transparency around renewables to help them make the decision to switch that much easier," Robert Groves, chief executive of Smartest Energy, said in a statement. "We now supply over 3TWh of renewable power - equivalent to the power needed to operate all of the streetlights in the UK for three quarters of a year - all backed by origin certificates and evidenced by our Energy Labels, so the momentum for businesses to buy renewable is really growing."

Energy Label

The idea for the Energy Labels originated from a report published by the Aldersgate Group in July 2014, which called for clear labelling of the carbon content of electricity. To implement the idea, Smartest Energy has worked with the Carbon Trust to trace each megawatt hour of its energy supply back to source.

Nick Molho, executive director of the Aldersgate Group, welcomed the move and called on more energy suppliers to adopt the practice. "The Aldersgate Group wrote the Enable the Label report in 2014, proposing an electricity label to increase the transparency of energy bought by businesses in order to drive corporate demand for renewable electricity," he said in a statement. "It's great to see one of the leading suppliers of renewable energy building on this work and bringing this much-needed tool to market. We hope this is the start of all UK suppliers providing an A-G rated label for the electricity they have supplied to their business customers, to help drive uptake of renewable electricity."
