AkzoNobel puts finishing touches to new paint recycling hub

Remanufacturing centre – only the second in the UK – will provide low-cost recycled paint to community groups and those in social need

AkzoNobel UK, the British arm of the Dutch multinational behind the paint brand Dulux, has opened its second paint remanufacturing centre collecting unwanted household paint and recycling it into low-cost quality emulsion for communities in need.

The new site, opened in partnership with Community RePaint late last week, is located on the Wirral in north East England, and aims to drastically slash the amount of leftover paint going to landfill.

Instead, the waste paint will be collected then recycled using technology developed by AkzoNobel, before being redistributed to those in need, including flood victims and low-income households.

"British households throw away 55 million litres of paint every year, but over half of this paint is good enough to reuse," said Matt Pullen, AkzoNobel's UK managing director. "This innovative scheme is leading our industry in reducing the amount of paint currently entering the waste stream, as well as having a transformative impact, alongside Community RePaint, by colouring the lives of those who can least afford it."

It comes as AkzoNobel and Community RePaint celebrate the success of the UK's first paint recycling hub, which opened in Cambridge last year and has now recycled 10,000 litres of paint.

Each household has on average 17 tins of paint stored in sheds, garages and outbuildings, AkzoNobel said. More than half of this waste paint is still reusable, and AkzoNobel and Community RePaint aim to produce more than 100,000 litres of recycled paint by the end of 2017.
