Nestlé backs up renewables pledge with Scottish wind farm deal

Financial close reached for Sanquhar Community Wind Farm that is set to supply Nestlé UK operations

A Scottish wind farm set to supply 125GWh a year of clean power to Nestlé has taken a major step towards completion after closing its funding round.

The nine turbine Sanquhar Community Wind Farm in Dumfries and Galloway reached financial close last week with an investment of £40m, developer Community Windpower confirmed yesterday.

Financed by German bank KfW IPEX, the project is contracted to supply Nestlé UK with around 125GWh of power a year in support of its target to source all its electricity from renewables.

Danish manufacturer Vestas will supply its new V112 turbines for the project, which is due for commissioning in 2017, while the steel towers sourced from CS Wind's Campbeltown factory in Argyll.

Andrew Griffiths, head of environmental sustainability at Nestlé UK and Ireland, said the investment represents "a milestone moment" in meeting Nestlé's commitment to sourcing power from renewable energy technologies.

Lesley Black, UK sales and marketing manager of CS Wind UK, praised Community Wind Power for its commitment to using the UK supply chain wherever possible.

"A major employer in a rural area, the CS Wind UK factory supports over 160 local jobs and contributes over £7m per year in wages to the UK economy," she said in a statement. "The support and commitment from Community Windpower to source in Scotland helps to ensure that the benefits and opportunities from renewable energy projects are also felt in the UK manufacturing and supply chain industries."

In other wind industry news, MHI Vestas Offshore Wind today announced it has won a competitive tender to supply its turbines to the 252MW Deutsche Bucht offshore wind project in the German North Sea, which is owned by British Wind Energy.

"Being nominate for our second project in Germany underlines the strength of the V164-8.0 MW as a competitive turbine for the market, where distance from the coast and deeper waters demands a larger and more powerful machine," said Jens Tommerup, chief executive of MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, in a statement.
