Report: Half of all EU citizens could be generating their own electricity by 2050

New report from European Renewable Energies Federation suggests 264 million 'energy citizens' will be living in the EU by 2050

By 2050 half of all EU citizens could be actively participating in the energy market by generating, storing or selling their own electricity, according to a major new report released this week by the European Renewable Energies Federation.

The report suggests 264 million so-called "energy citizens" could meet 45 per cent of the EU's electricity demand by 2050, as the energy market across the continent shifts from large, centralised generation to one where decentralised generation and storage technologies enable people to produce their own electricity and heat and help the grid manage demand.

In the UK alone there is predicted to be up to 24 million 'energy citizens' using a range of clean energy technologies from solar PV and wind to e-boilers, electric vehicles, demand response systems and stationary energy storage units.

The report was welcomed by Dr Nina Skorupska, chief executive of the Renewable Energy Association, who pointed to the fact there are already more than one million "energy citizens" in the UK generating or storing their own energy.

"Decentralised energy also offers a new source of savings or revenue - over a million people in the UK are already doing so through solar PV, energy storage, EVs and other tech," she said in a statement. "This new report shows the potential for up to 24 million of these 'energy citizens' by 2050."

However, the report warns that 'energy citizens' face "significant legal obstacles" to generating and storing their own electricity.

It urges the European Union to simplify the current legal framework around energy generation to allow ordinary citizens to maximise their contribution to the renewable energy transition.

The report comes just days after the UK's Solar Trade Association similarly warned a lack of policy and legal clarity around the emerging energy storage market was hampering the sector's expansion.
