Moixa unveils solar-plus-storage package

Energy storage specialist launches £4,995 solar and home battery installation deal

Home energy storage firm Moixa has today launched a new solar-plus-storage package, which it says will help housing associations and councils cut fuel poverty at the same time as cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

From next Monday the London-based firm will offer the £4,995 deal - which includes a 2KWh Moixa Smart Battery, an eight-panel 2KWh solar photovoltaic system, and installation of the system - to homeowners, housing associations and councils.

According to Moixa, customers will typically save around £350 a year through both electricity savings and feed-in-tariff payments, with savings expected to increase in coming years if electricity costs rise.

The firm's lithium ion phosphate battery is also AC coupled, giving it the potential to import electricity from the grid as well as export it, the firm added.

The functionality means the introduction of smart tariffs from 2017 would potentially allow customers to buy cheaper off-peak power from the grid and store it for use at peak times.

Moixa is also offering those installing the system the option to earn an extra £50 a year by agreeing to make their battery capacity available through Moixa's demand response GridShare platform.

The firm said it expects to increase these payments over time as the market for grid balancing services develops.

Chris Wright, chief technology officer for Moixa, said the deal represented a market-leading offer which the firm hopes will provide a boost to a solar installation market hit by recent cuts to feed-in tariff incentives.

"It will protect customers from rising electricity prices and allow them to benefit from the smart power revolution, accessing smart tariffs and making money by supporting the development of a reliable, cost-effective, low-carbon electricity system," he said in a statement.

Since launching its first pilots in the UK in 2010, London-based Moixa has now installed smart batteries with a combined capacity over 1.3MWh in over 600 homes. The storage unit has a 20-year lifespan and comes with an extendable 10-year guarantee, the firm said.

The launch of the new package comes after the firm conducted several trials funded by the National Energy Action charity to demonstrate how storage and solar PV can help lower bills and tackle fuel poverty when coupled with other initiatives.

Councillor Meric Apak, sustainability and environment cabinet member for Camden Council - where one of the trials saw smart batteries installed in social housing - said storing solar energy can provide one method of helping their tenants tackle fuel poverty. "Solar plus storage is of huge interest to Camden Council," he said. "This technique helps meet our Green Action for Change environmental targets by actively reducing the carbon footprint across our housing stock."
