African countries pledge to put agricultural adaptation 'at the heart" of UN climate summit

Marrakesh Declaration pledges to step up co-operation between African countries as they battle to enhance climate resilience and boost agricultural productivity

A coalition of 27 African countries have pledged to put adaptation of agriculture to make it more climate resilient "at the heart" of the next round of UN climate negotiations in Marrakesh next month.

The new Marrakesh Declaration - not to be confused with the homonymous named declaration made by Muslim religious leaders in January to defend the rights of religious minorities - was adopted at a high-level meeting of ministers in Morocco last week.

The declaration aims to place agriculture centre stage at the upcoming COP22 climate negotiations in Marrakesh this November by highlighting the urgent need for a sustainable increase in productivity and agricultural earnings alongside the development of new climate adaptation and resilience measures.

It also commits signatories to "endorse the principle" of larger, more effective and efficient, public and private funding, to be delivered through frameworks such as the Global Climate Action Agenda.

In addition, the group said it would work to highlight best practices such as soil management and climate-risk alleviation measures, and help encourage effective agricultural policies and programmes in African countries.

The meeting was brokered by the Adaptation of African Agriculture (AAA) initiative, which works to enhance access of agricultural adaption projects in Africa to climate funds as well as scrutinise the allocation of these funds.
