Forget Doritos and sugary sodas, the goodies that this vending machine in San Francisco recently dispensed were out of the ordinary! Instead of junk food, the machine, which was installed by Tourism British Columbia, delivered large goodies that would be used in adventure travel. To the delight of the crowd that gathered around it at San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza, oversize vending machine doled out bikes, inflatable kayaks and surfboards to promote outdoor activities in British Columbia. The 14-foot-tall vending machine spit out mountain bikes and surfboards as if they were packages of chips, as well as life vests and giant British Columbia postcards. Emblazened with photographs from British Colombia’s lush countryside, the mysterious vending machine invaded Justin Herman Plaza in downtown San Francisco, a heavily-trafficked area.
Each of the goodies given out were meant to show San Franciscans the eco-travel adventures they could experience in the Canadian province. The giant vending machine was possibly the most innovative tourism campaign we’ve seen yet — especially because it promotes the many eco-tourism options that British Columbia has to offer.
